Friday afternoon
The group introduced themselves and told of breastfeeding promotion activities in their area. Mary Beth Blue provided an update on the physician’s conference in San Antonio. Lizabeth Berkeley told about the breastfeeding café that TDH, Texas Tech, Thomason Hospital, El Paso First, Superior Health Care, Laura W. Bush Women’s Health Institute, and others are starting in El Paso. Janet Rourke told about the Dining for Donations at Applebees event that occurred on May 7.
Linda Jackson, Alisa Niederstadt, and Krystal Revai gave an update on the USBC conference in January.
Alisa Niederstadt showed a brief slide program honoring Judy Hopkinson. Judy was given a Visa gift certificate as a going away present.
Susan Landers updated members on AAP’s breastfeeding efforts. Susan described a project she wanted to do to train physicians. She applied for a grant, but was turned down. TXBC discussed possibly funding this project since she was only requesting $800, with the possibility of requesting additional funding from TALWD to take the training to other locations in the state.
Alisa described possible grant proposals.
- Banners, displays with TXBC information
- Followup on Business Case for Breastfeeding
The group discussed becoming a 501-c-3 nonprofit organization. We are looking for an example of a 501-c-3 application that has been approved for a breastfeeding coalition
The group then discussed by-laws. We decided that we need 1 member from each local coalition to serve on funding, 501-c-3, and by-laws committees.
Mary Beth Blue offered to sponsor the fall TXBC meeting in San Antonio. She thinks she can get free meeting space. She will get back with us on dates, either in late September or late October.
Most of the group then proceeded to Patsy’s Cowgirl Café to socialize and have dinner. A good time was had by all. We even snake-danced our way back to the entrance as we left (some of us had several margaritas and were caught up in the Beatles music being played by the band).
Saturday
Alisa and Linda took turns presenting the train-the-trainer course on the Business Case for Breastfeeding. At the strategic planning session, we decided to have a stakeholders meeting and invite organizations that might be able to help us convince businesses to support breastfeeding mothers. It was decided to have the meeting in Austin since most of the organizations have headquarters here. Susan Landers offered to check on free space at Dell Children’s Center in August and September.
We came up with the following list of Stakeholders to invite to the meeting:
Association of Daycare Providers Texas Retail Association Texas Restaurant Association Texas Chamber of Commerce Texas Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies Texas Association of School Boards Texas Work Force Commission Professional Insurance Organization (?) Texas Hospital Association Texas Pediatric Society Texas Medical Association Texas Quality ? (Baldridge) UT System Board of Colleges Employee unions Texas Department of Agriculture Obesity Program (Rhonda Lane) Texas Worksite Wellness Coordinator (Brett Spencer, Courtney Greenberg) The original stakeholders
We discussed what we wanted the stakeholders to do:
- Support/endorse the Business Case for Breastfeeding
- Encourage their members to support breastfeeding mothers
- Complete the application to become a Mother Friendly Business and encourage their members to do so
- Provide TXBC with a letter of support
- Include an article about the Business Case for Breastfeeding in their newsletter or in a member mailout
- Provide us with a contact name and number for follow-up
We then discussed what we would do for the stakeholders who endorsed the Business Case for Breastfeeding:
- Give them a button that says Founding Member of the Texas Breastfeeding Coalition
- List them as endorses on materials and on our website
- Offer assistance to their members in setting up worksite breastfeeding support programs
The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 pm.
