2. Announcements:
a. Maria Modh - trip to Juarez to visit Baby Friendly Hospital planned for September 20, 2006 will probably be rescheduled for October 12, 2006. Please contact Libby Berkeley or Inés Anchondo for more information.
b. Lizabeth Berkeley – SWABA’s bank account was closed a check for $105 was issued Ines will consult accountant to find out what is the next step such as open another bank account and possibly pay past taxes. The Texas Tech media office prepared a banner with information that was published in El Paso Times to celebrate breastfeeding at work week activities. There is also an article from NYT about the difficulties and issues working women face when breastfeeding.
c. Inés Anchondo – applying for continuing education credits from IBCLE. Pending to receive information to share at next meeting.
3. Educational portion: Inés Anchondo – not given due to time constraints.
a. Decreasing childhood obesity by increasing breastfeeding rates
4. Administrative stuff – not discussed.
a. SWABA restructuring update
Activities:
a. Lizabeth Berkeley – Begin at birth grant was approved for another year. Maribel Ramirez Lactation Educator will staff “warm line” starting in November 1st 2006.
b. Lizabeth Berkeley and Inés Anchondo – El Paso city wide breastfeeding rates. Will publish results in table format and report next meeting. WIC and Texas Tech University HSC-El Paso rates were available and discussed.
7. Upcoming conferences, meetings:
1. Sept. 28-30, 2006 - Hale/Hartmann Lactation Research Conference, Richmond, Virginia
2. Potential TDH Breastfeeding course (formerly Phase I and Phase II) in El Paso next fall (2006). Maria Corona will discuss.
3. EPANN conference October 5 and 6 at Providence will feature Paula Meier (expert strategies for lactation in NICU). For more information call Liz Smith 915-577-6030 or Irene Perreault 915-577-6664.
4. State wide coalition: Stakeholders meeting to take place in Austin, TX October 6, 2006. Please refer to attached announcement. www.txbfcoalition.org
