The call began promptly at 12:30.  Judy Hopkinson volunteered serve as secretary for the call.

Reports from the Field:

  • Gail Gresham: Report on BF in Emergencies and Red Cross – Barbara Wilson Clay, Tracy Erickson and others met with Red Cross and are producing an emergency quick reference card (on breastfeeding in emergencies) for Central Texas and a page for the Red Cross training manual.
  • Tracy Erickson – wrote an article and press release on BF in emergencies- but DSHA declined to issue it. She sent the article and press release to Janet R (or TXBC) to change names and release for TXBC. Janet sent it to Judy Hopkinson to see if she could arrange a release from the TXBC (possibly with Baylor’s help). Judy is not sure if Baylor will help, but she will try.
  • DSHS has exceeded the FY 2007 travel cap, temporarily keeping Tracy from traveling to San Diego to present at ILCA. Tracy is still hopeful additional travel funds will be approved. Approval for out-of-state travel for state employees in FY 08 is unknown.
  • Judy Eastburn in Dallas: DABA is in process of distributing posters and will be going to Red Cross with those.
  • Judy Hopkinson: Harris County is adding breastfeeding in emergencies information to the emergency preparedness training for medical professionals.
  • Judy Hopkinson: Alerted group to Nouris international small grant potential.  www.nouris.org

Call for abstracts for the 2008 USBC conference: Distribution of the announcement and guidelines for submission were confirmed. The following individuals/groups expressed their interest in submitting abstracts on the following topics:

  • 1) Breastfeeding in Emergencies: Tracy Erickson, Barbara Wilson Clay, Possibly – but this will depend on travel funds
  • 2) El Paso initiatives (Thomason, etc.) - Libby is exploring whether to submit an abstract.

Responsibility for organizing the next 2 TXBC calls:

  • August: San Antonio Breastfeeding Coalition - Karen Bohr of SABC – with help from Kathy Parkes who will not be able to participate in that call.
  • December: SWABA – will consider this, and Marsha Lutostanski will do the next one through Houston in January.
  • Janet Rourke suggested that we set up a formal rotation through the coalitions. It was agreed that we would move toward that arrangement as soon as feasible.
  • Legislative Status Report:
    • Distribution of report on the breastfeeding licensure bill from BWC was confirmed.
    • The report on the Right to BF legislation is in progress and will be distributed shortly.

BFHI and Ban the Bag survey updates:

Judy Hopkinson reported that we have information from 4 hospitals:

    Thomason General Hosp

    TCH/St. Lukes

    Baylor Perinatal Center

    Memorial Hosp - Sugarland

  • No other hospitals have reported. Dallas agreed to review the materials and complete the survey.

Announcements:

  • Next TXBC enface conference will be held in Dallas-Ft Worth in October

At this point the CDC call began.

Notes following the CDC call:

During the call Judy shared the TX survey of BFHI status and the potential press release in association with the ABM meeting. Kat Shealy warned that when names of hospitals in process of applying for Baby Friendly certification have been released, these hospitals have been targeted with heavy marketing campaigns. We may want to reconsider releasing the names of hospitals in any press release until the final BFHI designation is achieved.

CDC will send specific state report calls Friday or Monday. Texas will have one week to get reports back.

Judy Hopkinson reported that Marcia Lutostanski of LLL is collaborating with the HCBC to hold a Breastfeeding Fair at Gallery furniture for World Breastfeeding day.

Gail Gresham shared some of the things that TX WIC local agencies will be doing including health fairs, pregnancy fair, Dallas Walk 1st Saturday the 4th

The TXBC call adjourned at 2:45 pm.
