Notes from July 10, 2006 TXBF executive committee conference call.
Participants:
Julie Stagg, Rani Garcia, Mary Beth Blue, Judy Hopkinson, Kat Jackson, Linda Jackson, Pamela Berens
The purpose of this call was to discuss an agenda for the stakeholder meeting on Oct 6.
Decisions made:
1) The entire stakeholder session should be 3-4 hours in length to allow sufficient time for discussion and to make the trip worth while.
2) Time will be used in part to obtain stakeholder input on activities. This will be best accomplished in breakout sessions. The committee will ask Jeannette Crenshaw to help with the breakout sessions.
Mary Beth Blue reported that her husband (a professional facilitator) considered our needs and felt it would be important to have a facilitator/moderator who was a topic expert and who understood how each stakeholder might contribute.
We agreed that it would be fun to have a comic speaker or motivational speaker (such as the one suggested by Kat), but we were not sure there would be enough time to incorporate it into the program.
NEXT STEP: We agreed that each of us would attempt to draft an agenda covering what seemed to us to be essential, and that we would work on clarifying the agenda at the next conference call.
NEXT CALL: Three dates were suggested for the next call and Judy Hopkinson agreed to send around an e-mail to help identify the best date.
Below are the topics identified as possible inclusions in the agenda – this is rough and should not be taken as set in stone. Rani Garcia was volunteered to cover the introductions (parts 1, and 2 and possibly 3 below)
- Tell them why we are forming a state-wide coalition
- So that the state of Texas can speak with one voice about breastfeeding when the need arises
- To promote good breastfeeding support policies state-wide
- To enhance the resources of local organizations and associations interested in promoting breastfeeding
- Tell them the history to date
- National USBC conference
- Statewide meeting of BF local coalition leaders
- Legacy statement, mission, goals
- Activities for first year:
- Support legislative agenda
- Gather local BF resource information
- Build / expand web site
- Expand coalition to include key stakeholders for cultural change
- Tell them why they are included as key stakeholders
- Because they have already done great things (give specific examples from around the table)
- Because they represent key elements of life in Texas (LLL and the immigrant organization and??)
- Because they have the expertise to know might and might not be possible in specific settings
- Find out why they are here and what they hope a Texas Breastfeeding Coalition might do for them.
- Give assignments for networking during lunch. Possible assignments:
- Introduce yourself to 2-3 others from your part of Texas who might collaborate with you in some way to promote breastfeeding.
- Get to know 2-3 others who work in organizations similar to your own in different parts of the state. Find out about their challenges and successes in providing breastfeeding support or other parenting support to clients / employees
- Get to know someone from a completely different line of work than your own. Find out what they are doing or would like to do to promote breastfeeding.
- Buffet lunch
- Break into work groups and brainstorm - to come up with ideas for activities that the TXBC might adopt –
- What types of activities do they think the state needs to help increase BF rates and make TX a place where BF is the norm?
- What do they think about some of the programs already in place here or elsewhere?
- Report back to group with suggested activities.
- Give some specific immediate action challenges – possibilities:
- Ask them to help garner legislative support for upcoming session’s bills (will have sample letters in hand)
- Ask them to vote on the final logo
- Ask them to fund prizes for the logo contest
- Ask them to consider donations for next WBF month activities around the state
- Revise the Texas Infant Feeding Position Statement
