Spring conference:
Janet asked everyone to e-mail her with the following information regarding their participation in the March 9 conference:
- Planned attendance – yes/ no
- Whether you intend to participate in the visit to the legislature
- Whether you will be ordering lunch (you will need to complete a menu selection and bring $10 to the conference
- Whether you need airport pickup
- All handouts should be e-mailed to Kat Jackson who will prepare copies for distribution. Kat’s e-mail is: TexasKat@verizon.net
- Speakers need to send info on media requirements
- Ines reported that plans for the Baby-Friendly panel are progressing well. She has contacted Felicia Lane and is in the process of contacting Nuala (?) from the Dallas area who has agreed to share her experience as well.
- Linda Jackson reported that she and Rani are working on the Mother-Friendly worksite panel
- Ines will contact Linda with information regarding an El Paso business that may want to participate in the panel.
- Judy reported that the CDC powerpoint presentation on obesity will not be ready by March 9, but that she could present an overview of the research. The consensus was that this would be useful.
- Jeannette will present a short update on the activities of the USBC.
- Janet reviewed the agenda and all agreed that we will have to work hard to adher to time limits in order to complete the identified tasks in the allotted times.
- Next National Conference of State Breastfeeding Coalitions. Janet shared that the USBC has sent out a survey asking state coalition how they would like to participate in the next conference. There was considerable interest in volunteering. The following ideas were discussed:
- Abstracts for poster presentations on:
- Breastfeeding rooms at mother-friendly worksites
- Legislative work in Texas
- Drawing in diverse stakeholders
- Breakout sessions on
- Working toward Baby-Friendly (Ines volunteered to prepare a proposal for this)
- The TXBC experience and activities
- A question was raised about the number of participants. Jeannette Crenshaw explained that at least two representatives will be sent from each state. It is not yet entirely clear whether their will be funds for additional attendees, but others may attend. Janet also called Carol McGowan and was told that alternate applications will be taken. Funding is yet to be secured, so things are a bit uncertain. Judy H will update the coalition as information becomes available through her activities on the conference planning committee.
- WalMart “event”: In spite of the national alert and information on the web sites, there were no reports of formula distribution or special promotions at WalMarts in Texas.
- Hidalgo county – sent 11 peer counselors. They got a good response from WalMarts in the county. They were there all morning.
- The web site said that it would be at all the WalMarts in the area, but no one experienced formula reps.
- Sam’s Club was giving away formula samples the next week.
- Related commercial activity:
- TARGET An Austin peer counselor overheard a Target staff meeting held in the aisles during a recent visit in which breastfeeding policy was discussed. Employees were told that that all breastfeeding mothers should be permitted to BF in the store – even to use store furniture, and that no comments should be offered about covering up, etc.
- HEB (Gail Gresham) was asked to help HEB displays to feature more breastfeeding supplies.
- Janet suggested adding a page on the TXBC web site listing commendations for breastfeeding support by commercial establishments. Veronica – suggested listing commercial promotion etc.
- USBC/CDC conference call. A miscommunication was noted regarding the dial in for the CDC conference. The DSHS line cannot be used for this. Kat Jackson volunteered to host the line and quickly began making arrangements. (Thanks, Kat!)
