Texas Department of State Health Services courses designed to prepare health-care providers to appropriately and adequately support breastfeeding women and their infants. The material is presented at a level to fill the gaps in professional education. Continuing education credits are available. The courses are offered at various locations across the State.
Texas Ten Step Program http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/wichd/lactate/TXfact.shtm
A program developed in coordination with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Hospital Association to improve the health of Texas mothers and infants by promoting breastfeeding. The Texas Ten Step Program is based on the WHO-UNICEF Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Facilities must complete and submit a program application along with their written policy based on the Texas Ten Step Model Facility Policy and a copy of their training policy.

Resources include The Physician's Pocket Guide to Breastfeeding, Doctors Make the Difference: Incorporating Breastfeeding into Prenatal Care, Steps to a Breastfeeding-Friendly Practice, Physician Support Letter to Employer of Breastfeeding Mom (English and Spanish), ICD codes for providing lactation education and management services, and evidence-based breastfeeding information for health professionals who counsel new moms.

A Department of State Health Services program for Texas businesses that want to support their breastfeeding employees. Studies of this type of program have been shown to decrease turnover, lower absenteeism, increase morale and productivity, and reduce company benefits while expanding employee benefits. Employers must complete and submit a program application along with their written written policy to support employed mothers. The policy must include provisions for offering flexible work schedules to provide time for expression of milk, a private location to express milk, access to a nearby clean and safe water source and a sink for washing hands and rinsing breast pump equipment, and a place to store her milk. In return, employers receive a letter authorizing their Mother-Friendly Worksite (MFW) Program status, a MFW certificate and decal, and the ability to advertise their new status as an employee benefit.

Free Texas Department of State Health Services breastfeeding brochures and posters, available to anyone in Texas. Many of the materials are also posted in downloadable PDF format. Interested parties outside of Texas are welcome to download the PDF(s) to a disk, take the disk to a commercial printer, and print in unlimited quantities.

Right to Breastfeed! - It's Texas Law http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/wichd/lactate/mother.shtm#item2
A mother is entitled to breastfeed her baby in any location in which the mother is authorized to be, under the provisions of Chapter 165, Texas Health and Safety code, signed into law in 1995. The law also includes legisative recognition of breastfeeding as best method of infant nutrition and provisions for businesses to become Mother-Friendly Worksites.
