2. Educational Section

      Libby Berkeley presented the results of a research study about food allergy in later childhood and its correlation to having been breastfed. Also, in the July, 2006 meeting Libby talked about and distributed the article, “Breastfeed or else” published in the NYT Magazine on June 13, 2006. She brought the 15 pages of letters to the NYT in response to the article. 

 3.  Activities

A. World Breastfeeding Week “25 Years of Protecting Breastfeeding”

      1. The posters that highlighted the Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes were presented.  Three were made: One in Spanish by Maria Modh, and two in English by Maria Modh, Maria Corona, Libby Berkeley and Ines Anchondo. The two English posters were displayed in Sierra Medical Center, Texas Tech HSC-El Paso, and Thomason Hospital. The poster and handouts used for Sierra will be shared with Providence Hospital during the week of 8-21-06.   The poster prepared by Maria Modh was donated to Chaparral New Mexico.

      2. Libby Berkeley and Ines Anchondo emphasized that these posters could be lent to any other SWABA member for use during the month.  They are currently at Texas Tech and Sierra MC.  One will travel to Providence and possibly the other to Las Palmas.

      3. Baby’s R Us has a WBW activity coming up Saturday, Aug. 12, and Maria Corona will present three classes during the morning and early afternoon.  She will take the poster celebrating 25 years of the Code.

       4. Astrid Lara showed us and told about the WIC “Breastfeeding is Welcome Here” stickers and posters to post on business windows.  These are available in English and Spanish.  WIC has distributed these cards to business locally as a part of World Breastfeeding Month.

 B. Other Activities

    a.  Report from ILCA by Christie Pillado.  Christie will email us the table of contents of the ILCA conference notes for us to request more information if we are interested.  Christie shared information about the conference

    b. Christie Pillado – Discussed the possibility of starting a breastmilk depot here in El Paso, TX.  Ines and Maria Corona talked about lack of funding issues and feasibility. Ines will look into the requirements and present at the next meeting.

    c. Maria Corona – Reported that Sierra/Providence will print their own baby ID cards (pink and blue) thus, the formula baby ID cards will not be used any longer.

    d. Maria Modh – Announced another trip to Juarez to visit FEMAP on September 20th to leave El Paso between 10 and 11 AM.  Libby Berkeley will attend and anyone can call her or Maria Modh for more information.

    e. Data Collection - Data collection was originally done by SWABA in 2001 – 02.  It was presented by Libby Berkeley and unanimously agreed that SWABA will undertake another data collection of breastfeeding rates for our area at our various institutions for 2006 - 07.  Sierra, Thomason and Del Sol were represented.  Please - those of you from Beaumont, Providence, Las Palmas and Maternidad la Luz get in touch with us regarding this issue. It was agreed that at the next meeting Ines will present the data she is collecting for a breastfeeding research study and we will decide how to collect the rest of the data. 

     f. Libby Berkeley and Ines Anchondo will look into applying for CEU’s for nurses and IBCLCs for attending SWABA meetings. 

 4.       Administrative stuff -  

    a.       Formalizing SWABA – not discussed

    b.      Christie Pillado resigned.  Post-meeting note: Bank account has $105 in it.  She will close account and give the money as a cashier’s check to Libby Berkeley. We can discuss what to do with it at the Sept. meeting.

5. State wide coalition - www.txbfcoalition.org

6. There is an invitation from the state of Texas coalition to all artists to create a logo for the state of Texas breastfeeding coalition.  Please check website or contact Ines Anchondo (915-630-7623) for more information.  Remember:  we have a link on that site and anyone can go there to have access to our meeting dates, times and place (see top of minutes).

 7. Upcoming conferences, meetings -

    1. Sept. 28-30, 2006 - Hale/Hartmann Lactation Research Conference, Richmond, Virginia

    2. Potential TDH Breastfeeding course (formerly Phase I and Phase II) in El Paso next fall (2006).  Maria Corona will discuss.

    3. October 5-6, 2006. Third Annual Neonatal Conference organized by the El Paso Area Association of Neonatal Nurses. For more information call Liz Smith 915-577-6030 or Irene Perreault 915-577-6664.
