- 12:10 – 12:15 Annual Meeting on March 9, 2007
- Members reported on the meeting in Austin on March 9. Judy and Janet mentioned that Jessica Ferrar spent the whole day with us. Linda noted that the next state-wide meeting will be held in October in Dallas or Ft. Worth in concert with the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine conference. More information will follow. Pam Berens will let us know the particulars by the June Conference call.
- Janet mentioned that the legislation pending for licensure of LCs was discussed at the previous Weds. Committee meeting. She noted that the concerning issue is that it has been suggested to license LCs under the “Texas Medical Board” which would “effectively kill the bill”. The other legislation the “Right to Breastfeed” bill will be going forward. Sara Carrion asked if there would be any benefit to go under this board and Janet Rourke answered, “No”.
- 12:15 – 12:30 Ban the Bags – share with us what is the status of this topic in your Facility
- Laurie announced that there have been no bags at Children’s in Corpus since 2006. Judy said Texas Children’s in Houston just voted to ban the bags and that it will be coordinated carefully. Judy suggested that we need to achieve a state-wide report and do a press release by the October meeting regarding “Ban the Bags” in Texas. She will collect data from around the state and generate a spread sheet. Judy agreed to do this and share with the membership.
- 12:30 – 12:50 BFHI – lets compile a state-wide report of efforts to achieve BFHI status*
- Texas Children’s in Houston has formed a committee to explore becoming Baby Friendly Judy reported. Baylor has a Task Force as does Thomason Hospital in El Paso. There was some discussion about whether or not “manzanilla” or chamomile tea is universally used “until breast milk comes in” among Hispanics. Judy says there is some evidence it is in Houston, Inés says in El Paso the experience is that most Hispanic mothers give formula, not manzanilla. Inés also mentioned that in El Paso the problem with improving bf rates is that people feel as if they are “going backwards” if they breastfeed, that they are trying NOT to be “native”. Tracy Erickson said that there is a Social Marketing group in Austin looking into why there is so much “dos cosas” or breast and bottle reported in hospitals in Texas. Susan mentioned that WIC sees the same misinformation about “dos cosas” and chamomile tea. Tracy stressed the need to focus on training in hospitals and to develop materials in Spanish. Jewell noted that hospital procedures must be stressed because RNs still need help with improving breastfeeding among their patients in the first hours of life. Tracy said that she and Jewell have studied this “dos cosas” phenomenon in San Antonio (is this true - not sure?) and that it appeared to be an excuse to push formula. Susan said that RNs push formula in Austin too. Judy mentioned that the norm should be that no matter what the long term plans are for the mothers, that the assumption should be exclusive bf at the start. Stacy said in San Antonio that physicians are telling mothers to bottle feed. Judy noted that MDs need teaching too. Libby agreed wholeheartedly, noting that at Thomason in El Paso it is both RNs and MDs who need training. Judy asked Stacy whether or not high ranking officials are entertaining BFHI at NorthEast Baptist (please check! - don’t’ know) and Stacy said no, not at this time. Susan noted that RNs and MDs don’t’ have time (over an hour usually) to spend with a mother, that they have 1 IBCLC on staff and 3 in a “pool”. Pam Berens mentioned the office practice survey. Judy mentioned World Breastfeeding Day, and said that California is sponsoring a “Breastfeeding at Work” day.
