- “Warm Line” is open! Call (915) 799-7239 M-F from 12 noon – 4 p.m.
- Maribel Ramirez reviewed “contacts” list she is planning on using for referrals for Warm Line calls. She passed around the version that she had and people made corrections.
- Report from the EPAAN conference Oct. 5 – 6. Small correction on information reported by Terry Johnson on cup feeding.
- Update on IBLCE credits for SWABA meetings – Ines Anchondo reported that we can get SWABA meetings accredited if we send certain documents to IBLCE in anticipation of an educational component during the meeting. She explained the details. Members were all positive about moving forward with this item so that those of us who are IBCLC can accumulate credits towards recertification for SWABA meetings. Ines will do this for the January meeting. All agreed that IBCLC credits is what we will spend the money for ($105). Libby agreed to get the check cashed and give the money to Ines to send to IBLCE.
- Educational portion
- Ines Anchondo discussed the controversial issue of decreasing childhood obesity by increasing breastfeeding rates.
- Next months’ educational component: suggestion by Libby Berkeley is controversy over IBLCE’s new Scope of Practice document for IBCLCs. We did not discuss this.
- Updating city-wide breastfeeding rates
- There was discussion about what the purpose of this data collection is. Beth said that her institution will want to know the purpose. Libby answered that we need to know what the real rates are, re: exclusive vs. bottle and breast. The majority of those at the meeting agreed that the mother-baby couplets they see are rarely exclusively breastfeeding and that the “discharge” rate which is reported does not reflect the real breastfeeding rate. Libby offered to find out if the CDC which is now collecting rates from the National Immunization Survey (available state-by-state on their web site) has our hospitals or at least our city-wide rate. She will report on this at the next meeting.
- Who has rates for their institutions? No one did. Debbie Chasco sent word that Thomason would have to do a chart review in order to accurately reflect the rate there.
- State wide coalition (www.txbfcoalition.org)
- Ines reported that she and Libby had sent a letter to the state wide coalition inquiring about the “stakeholders” that were present at a meeting in Austin who voted on items for us all to undertake. [Everyone in SWABA was emailed about the meetings that had been via conference call since August.] Those present at our meeting seemed relatively uninformed about what was happening in Austin / Houston and the State-wide coalition. All were asked to nominate themselves as representatives from SWABA to serve on the temporary board of the Tx Breastfeeding Coalition. They would like us to appoint someone who would be willing to participate in conference calls and report back to SWABA. There is a meeting January 30 in Austin which is recommended to send an attendee. Everyone agreed that Ines would be our temporary representative.
- Membership application(s) for the state wide coalition were distributed and it was announced that anyone who wanted to fill one out could find it on the website.
- Upcoming conferences, meetings
- Potential TDH breastfeeding course – Maria Corona announced in Sept. meeting it will be Jan 19, 2007, NICU-focused only. Maria was unable to come to this meeting. As this information becomes available Maribel and Libby will Email everyone with it.
- Next meeting: it was agreed that we cancel the December meeting. The next meeting will be at Texas Tech, the second Thursday in January, the 11th.
